The last twenty years has seen explosive growth in this field with many manufacturers producing a plethora of products, covering stands and wall mounted brackets for Plasma and LCD televisions, racks to house various combinations of Hi-fi equipment and units for the storage of DVD/CD collections. The advent of “Home Entertainment Centres” has provided a further platform for even more products that form the world of Audio Visual Furniture.
Over the last 20-plus years Atacama has gained an enviable reputation for innovative design and manufacturing excellence. This stand is truly a new concept in speaker stands, its design brief being to develop a speaker stand that was unique, whilst having to complement the latest speaker designs, co-ordinate with modern home interiors and still meet the demands of the audio enthusiast. In addition, this new speaker stand needed to add interest to a room, rather than detract from it.
The design approach of the Aurora 6 speaker stand is certainly innovative in that the column is a clear glass cylinder and the polished glass base plate is shaped like a tear drop. The top plate is 50% heavier than that of the earlier Nexus model and a chrome torsion tube, which also allows the concealment of the speaker cable, holds the complete assembly together.

To eliminate the potential problem of “ringing” (sonic vibration) inherent in the design of a speaker stand containing a large amount of glass, Atacama turned to the motor sport industry, where high performance race cars can suffer from high frequency sonic vibration. In collaboration with a specialist motor sport component supplier, Atacama have developed the A.S.I.S.T Gasket which is fitted to both ends of the Aurora glass column. The Atacama Sonic Isolation System Technology gasket eliminates resonance within the glass column and provides a secure interface for the top and base plates. Three heavy-duty carpet spikes minimise floor contact and in combination with A.S.I.S.T., a significant improvement in isolation and dampening is achieved when compared to a conventional speaker stand.
Aesthetically the Aurora 6 speaker stands creates an immediate impression. The glass column provides endless possibilities to colour co-ordinate with the surrounding décor as it can be filled with just about any material that comes to mind (except liquids of living things!), for example coloured beads or sand. The choice is up to the user.
